Assistant Professor of Sustainability & Resource Efficiency in the Built Environment

Coordinator of the World Design Studio (WDS)

Representative of the International Collaboration Office (ICO)

Member of the Academic Committee for Bylaws & International Accreditation

Faculty of Engineering, Ain Shams University

I am currently a full-time assistant professor of Architectural Engineering at Ain Shams University (ASU), specialized in Sustainability & Resource Efficiency. In addition, I am the Egyptian coordinator of the World Design Studio (WDS) and a representative of the International Collaboration Office (ICO) at the Faculty of Engineering, ASU. I’m also a member in the Faculty Committee for Safety and Crisis Management, and the Academic Committee for Bylaws & International Accreditation for architecture programs. I’m also a reviewer in the Journal of Building Engineering (JOBE) and Ain Shams Engineering Journal (ASEJ).

I’m teaching the courses of Design Studios, Working Drawings, Building Rating Systems and LCA, Project Studies and Graduation Projects (recently under the WDS in collaboration with Clemson University from USA and Huazhong Agricultural University from China) in programs of “Architecture Engineering” and “Environmental Architecture” at ASU. Beside teaching selected topics on contemporary issues for interdisciplinary engineering programs at ASU too. In most of these courses, I embed sustainability, technology and resilience aspects. Most of these aspects are among my research interests with some international peer-reviewed publications, including Water efficiency in buildings, Sustainable building life cycle, Resource efficiency & circularity in buildings, building LCA, Water footprint of buildings, WEF nexus, Green smart technologies, and Climate Change mitigation & adaptation in cities.

I participated in international events and projects related to Climate Change and Resource Efficiency. I presented in the African Science Week 2019 with the theme “Climate Change in an African Context”. I supervised WDS 2019 project that tackled the improvement of urban resilience for the city of Charleston (USA) to adapt Climate Change impacts. I also participated in the “WEF Nexus Winter School” in Egypt, where I joined a multi-disciplinary team to conceptualize a project for community development based on nexus approaches. I recently participated in COP27 representing ASU as a presenter of some national projects in collaboration with NGOs in Egypt. I also participated in the MENA Regional Talk on Transformative Futures for Water Security.

I improved my expertise in addressing the Resource Circularity & Climate Emergency through my research work starting from the connection between my specialty in water & resource efficiency of the built environment and the impacts of Climate Change on resources and urbanism, to the most recent investigation of the role of smart, IoT & AI applications and other recent technologies in mitigating Climate Change on both building and city scales in terms of resource renewability, efficiency & circularity. Resource renewability, efficiency & circularity in the built environment are also included in some of my taught courses such as Architectural Design Studios, Environmental Design Studios, Building Life Cycle Assessment, Sustainable Building Rating Systems as well as Graduation Projects.
