Peter Harries is a geologically oriented paleobiologist by training. His research is focused on elucidating the patterns of biotic recovery following mass extinctions, examining an group of extinct bivalves - the inoceramids, and working to better understand the differences between green- and icehouse world climates.

Peter Harries received his BS in Geology and Geophysics from Yale University and then continued to the University of Colorado - Boulder for his PhD. He started his academic career at the University of South Florida - Tampa rising to full professor and then starting his administrative career as associate dean of Graduate Studies. He moved to NC State as senior associate dean and became the current dean in 2017.
