Eksploratoryòm: Improving Teaching in Haiti through Student-Centered Education, Blue Butterfly

Project Summary
Blue Butterfly and our partners are using an innovative approach to inspire change in teacher practice in Haiti. Most Haitian teachers rely on outdated pedagogical practices that mimic the authoritarian structures of Haiti’s colonial past. Instruction, which is typically conducted in the colonial language—French—rather than students’ first language, Haitian Creole, is based on traditional, teacher-centered practices. Students are not the drivers of their own learning. Blue Butterfly is flipping the script of top-down, teacher-focused classrooms toward engaged student learning. Our Eksploratoryòm science education program immerses teachers in an active learning pedagogy that fosters children’s critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Due to the lack of interpersonal networks, language and cultural barriers, and ethnic stereotypes, foreign students and fresh graduates encounter enormous difficulty in finding internships and jobs. Their choices are often constrained to jobs in manual labor. Furthermore, their absence of local internship experience diminishes their competitiveness in the job market. Therefore, we developed three flagship programs (Master Talk, International Talent+ Series and International Mentorship Program) interwoven with our industrial partnerships to bolster foreign students’ career development. These programs serve as a mutually-beneficial ecosystem for our partners. Mentorship-style internship and strong administrative support are key factors in our solution.
