David L.
Di Maria has worked as an international education scholar-practitioner for more
than twenty years. He is currently Senior International Officer and Associate
Vice Provost for International Education at the University of Maryland,
Baltimore County (UMBC), where he leads UMBC’s institutional strategy for
global engagement while overseeing a diverse portfolio of programs, projects
and initiatives that support the international dimensions of teaching, research
and service. Prior to joining UMBC, Di Maria served as Associate Provost for
International Programs at Montana State University, Director of International
Programs and Services at Kent State University and Assistant Director of
International Student and Scholar Services at St. Cloud State University.
Di Maria
is widely published within the field of international education. Among his more
than fifty publications are three books published by NAFSA: Association of
International Educators, including Achieving More with Less: Lean
Management in the International Student Office, Senior International Officers:
Essential Roles and Responsibilities and Managing a Successful
International Admissions Office: NAFSA’s Guide to International Admissions. He
is also the editor of a fourth book, published by STAR Scholars
Press, Entry Points to U.S. Education: Accessing the Next Wave of Growth.
He serves on the Editorial Board of Internationalisation of Higher
Education: Policy and Practice and the Editorial Review Board of
the Journal of International Students.
Di Maria
has held multiple volunteer leadership positions within the field of
international education. These include chair of NAFSA's International Education
Leadership (IEL) Knowledge Community, chair of NAFSA's International Enrollment
Management (IEM) Knowledge Community and founding faculty for NAFSA’s Executive
Internationalization Leadership e-Institute. Outside of NAFSA, Di Maria
has worked to advance the field as president of AIRC: The Association of
International Enrollment Management, founding faculty for AIRC’s Professional
Certificate in International Recruitment and Enrollment Planning, faculty for
the Association of International Education Administrators’ (AIEA) Leadership
Academy for New Senior International Officers, member of the American Council
on Education’s Commission on Internationalization and Global Engagement and
member of the Executive Committee of the Association of Public and Land-Grant
Universities’ Commission on International Initiatives.
Di Maria earned undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and he studied abroad at the University of Tartu in Estonia. His doctorate, which he received from the University of Minnesota, focused on internationalization from a P-16 perspective.
