Dr. Janet
Chan is a Senior Lecturer and academic leader in the School of
Biological Sciences at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), specializing in
environmental management, sustainability education, and waste governance. With
a Ph.D. in Environmental Pollution and Toxicology, an M.Sc. in Environmental
& Public Health Management, and a B.Sc. in Environmental Life Science, her
career bridges cutting-edge research, policy innovation, and transformative
education.
A pioneer in pollution studies, Dr. Chan’s doctoral and postdoctoral
work focused on electronic waste recycling processes in China, resulting in over 20 high-impact publications on
persistent organic pollutants, ecological risk assessment, and regulatory
frameworks. Since joining HKU in 2010, she has driven institutional change as Program Coordinator & Chief Examiner
for the M.Sc. in Environmental Management and as the founder of the HKU Climate Ambassador Program—a flagship
sustainability initiative. Her leadership has secured HKD 16 million in annual teaching income and HKD 8 million in grants for projects spanning ESG knowledge
exchange, climate education, Students as Partners pedagogy, and eco-shoreline
trials. Her innovative curricula earned the Gold Award at the Hong Kong Teaching Excellence Alliance’s Design Thinking
Competition, the University’s
Outstanding Teaching Award of the University of Hong Kong, the Award for Teaching Excellence from the
HKU Faculty of Science, the Advanced
Materials Innovation Award from the International Association of Advanced
Materials, and finalist positions in the QS
Reimagine Education and PIEoneer Awards.
Beyond academia, Dr. Chan shapes environmental governance as an
advisor to the Hong Kong SAR Government, serving on committees such as the Lantau Conservation Fund, and contributing
as a Panel Member for the Research
Assessment Exercise (RAE) 2026 of the University Grants Committee. She has
directed over 160 projects on
education for sustainable development, waste management, green innovation,
sustainable finance, and collaborating with NGOs, industry partners, and global
institutions. Recognized for her mentorship, she has guided over 260 students, co-authored research
with students, and amplified public outreach through media campaigns and youth
empowerment initiatives.
As a Senior Fellow of
Advance HE, a Professional Member of
the Hong Kong Institute of Qualified Environmental Professionals, and a former director of the Environmental
Management Association of Hong Kong, Dr. Chan’s global perspective stems
from her tenure at the YMCA Geneva
Headquarters, where she led climate action programs aligned with the UN
Millennium Development Goals and championed youth gender equality. Prior to her
current role, she conducted science education research at HKU’s Faculty of
Education.
