  Ki Sum Samson is an interdisciplinary medical humanities educator with a background in medical education, social gerontology, and thanatology. He first joined Medical Ethics and Humanities Unit (MEHU) of HKUMed in 2014 as a Teaching Assistant to the late Professor L.C. Chan, Founding Co-Director of the Unit. He is currently one of the two educators in Hong Kong accredited as Fellow (FAcadMEd) at the Academy of Medical Educators in the U.K.

 

  Of his 11 years of service in MEHU, one of Samson’s highlights was having adapted the method of photo-elicitation for promoting medial students’ awareness of age-related biases during COVID pandemic (2020-2013) in response to the spread of ageism in societies.  For this work, he became a recipient of “Young Scholar Merit Award” at NUS’s Asia Pacific Medical Education Conference (APMEC) in 2022.

 

  Samson’s approaches to pedagogical innovation have been globally acclaimed. In 2023, he became the first HKU teacher to be presented a Gold Award (Pedagogical Innovation) at The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s Teaching and Learning Innovation Expo. From 2023 to 2024, he was a two-time Finalist in the “Nurturing Values and Ethics” category at QS Reimagine Education Awards. In 2025, Samson was rated Asia’s Top 1 "Most Innovative Teacher of the Year" in 2025 by Times Higher Education (THE).
