Maya Haddad is a dedicated climate activist and sustainability champion with over 10 years of experience in sustainability and EHS management. Currently leading sustainability initiatives at Ajman University, she focuses on environmental sustainability, climate change, and community engagement. Her work includes developing green business models and promoting biodiversity. Maya is actively involved in various sustainability networks and initiatives, advocating for eco-friendly practices and education in higher education institutions.

Ms. Haddad is a highly qualified professional with international certifications in five ISO standards, including food safety, HACCP, quality management, and environmental management. She is also IOSH Managing Safely certified and a GRI Sustainability Professional. Her commitment extends beyond certifications, with active memberships in numerous sustainability organizations, including the International Society of Sustainability Professionals, Emirates Green Building Council, and the Emirates Higher Education Network for Safety Professionals. Additionally, she holds leadership positions as Head of Operations for the UAE Universities Climate Network and is an affiliate member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA).

Under her leadership, Ajman University has achieved remarkable sustainability milestones, including:

  • Awarded the Plan to Action: Year of Sustainability Seal for impactful contributions to sustainability in the UAE.

  • Greening Communities: Spearheaded the Mangrove Planting Project, with 3,500 trees planted by 1,200+ volunteers.

  • Ranked #1 in the UAE for SDG 13: Climate Action (THE Impact Rankings 2024) and #3 nationally for Environmental Sustainability (QS Rankings).

  • First in the UAE to join the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN), alongside Harvard and MIT.

  • Active member in the Nature Positive Universities initiative, promoting biodiversity targets on campus.

  • Global Race to Zero Commitment: One of only two UAE universities pledged to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030.

Notably, she secured Ajman University's participation in crucial global initiatives like the UN's Higher Education Sustainability Initiative, Race to Zero, Greening Education Partnership with UNESCO, and the Nature Positive Pledge (alongside the University of Oxford and UNEP). She further propelled the university's engagement by spearheading its representation at COP27 (Egypt) and COP28 (UAE), delivering over 10 impactful sessions on sustainable development and climate action.

Under her leadership, the Office of Sustainability at Ajman University has flourished. Ms. Haddad spearheaded the organization of the "Make it Sustainable" Forum, focusing on higher education's role in promoting sustainable development goals, fostering collaboration, and paving the way for COP28. Her initiatives encompass climate change mitigation, environmental sustainability, zero-waste programs, emergency preparedness, food safety, and UN SDGs.

Ms. Haddad's dedication to continuous learning is evident in her pursuit of an MBA in Environmental Health and Safety Leadership and NEBOSH International Diploma. Her master's thesis research on the impact of ESG standards in UAE universities further demonstrates her commitment to advancing sustainability in higher education. Her expertise is further underscored by her GRI Certified Sustainability Professional status and IEMA certification in environmental sustainability skills for managers.
