Gyula Vastag is currently Professor at Széchenyi István University (Győr, Hungary) and he is also a Professor (part-time) and Senior Academic Advisor to the Rector of the Ludovika – University of Public Service (Budapest, Hungary). Between 2019 and 2021, he served as Vice-Rector for Research at Corvinus and later, till August 2022, as a Research Professor. Prior to re-joining his alma mater, he served as Director of the Management PhD Program at Széchenyi István University (Győr, Hungary). Born in Hungary, he earned PhD and Doctor of Sciences degrees from the predecessor of Corvinus University of Budapest, from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and finished habilitation at Corvinus University. Between 1989 and 2006, he worked in the United States on the faculties of the Kelley School of Business (Indiana University), The Eli Broad Graduate School of Management (Michigan State University), and The Kenan-Flagler Business School (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill). Between 2005 and 2007, he was Visiting Professor (part-time) at the University of Groningen (The Netherlands). He spent the 2000/2001 academic year in Stuttgart where he was Professor and Dean of Supply Chain Management Programs and held a visiting professorship afterwards.
Dr. Vastag co-authored and edited six books (by Elsevier, Pearson, the National Association of Purchasing Management, and Dialog Campus), a case study collection (by NKE KTI), wrote eight business cases, and he has contributed chapters to about 20 books. His papers (40+ refereed journal publications) were published in a variety of peer-reviewed academic (including five papers in the Financial Times list of Top Journals) and professional journals in the United States and in Europe. Gyula received several research awards: Award of International Publication Excellence by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (2023), New Central Europe Distinguished Senior Researcher Scholarship (2014), Best Applications Paper Award by Alpha Iota Delta – The International Honor Society in Decision Sciences and Information Systems (2012), and Award for Research Excellence from Corvinus University (2009). He was the Founding Editor of the Pannon Management Review, is the Associate Editor of the Decision Sciences and serves on the editorial boards of the Central European Business Review, Business Research, and Statisztikai Szemle (Hungarian Statistical Review). He has served as Senior Editor and Department Editor for Decision Sciences Journal’s Special Issues on “Supply Chain Decisions in Governmental Organizations” and “Information and Operational Decision Sciences.” Between 1991 and 2012 he was member of the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Operations Management.
Dr. Vastag worked with a number of organizations including the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa), Carlson School of Management (University of Minnesota), International Institute for Management Development (IMD) in Switzerland, Global TransPark Authority of North Carolina, Knorr-Bremse Hungary, the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration, North Carolina State University, International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (Austria), ESSEC-Mannheim Business School (Germany), OTP Bank, and the University of St. Gallen (Switzerland). In 2017-2019, he headed the “Servitization of Public Services” Ludovika Research Group at the National University of Public Service. He has served as external promotion reviewer for US and European universities, jury member for award committees (most recently the European Public Sector Award – 2019) and has been on various national and international scholarship and award committees. He has been an invited speaker at Panels and Faculty Development Workshops of DSI and POMS, at PhD courses (most recently, KATAJA 2022 at Aalto Business School – The Finnish Doctoral Program in Business Studies).
From 2022, he serves on the Board of the Production and Operations Management Society as Vice President for Education. Between 2010 and 2016 he was on the Board of the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI). He is Founding Member, Member of the Executive Board (since 2009) of the European Decision Sciences Institute and served as its President in two terms. In 2019, he received DSI’s highest level of award, the Dennis E. Grawoig Distinguished Service Award, for his service to the institute both in publicly recognized roles and behind the scenes.
He is Founding Member and past Associate Director of the Global Manufacturing Research Group. He served on the Executive Committee of the International Society for Inventory Research (1998-2006); between 2006 and 2014 he was Member of the Auditing Committee. Between 2017 and 2019, he was a co-opted member of the European Operations Management Association’s Board. Gyula was Program Chair, Track Chair, PhD Workshop Coordinator and member of the Scientific Committee of numerous conferences, including – among others – the POMS International 2022 – Budapest Conference, the 25th Conference of the European Operations Management Association (2018), the 47th Annual Meeting of the Decision Sciences Institute (2017), the 2015 Conference of the Transatlantic Policy Consortium (TPC), the 44th Annual Meeting of the Decision Sciences Institute (2013), the 2015 Conference of the International Public Management Network (IPMN), and the 4th Annual Conference of the European Decision Sciences Institute (2013).
