 Award-winning journalist and communications officer with 5+ years of experience in tech, health, climate change, and gender equality.

Karuana Mwai is a seasoned award-winning journalist, author and Sexual Health Reproductive Rights (SHRH) advocate. Her stories have appeared in Kenyan leading media platforms including Journalist for Justice (JFJ), the Star Newspaper third largest in circulation, Opera News Kenya, Money254, and Kenya Free Press. She is passionate about storytelling and SHRH, educational and economic rights of the girl child in Kenya. 


In 2021 Karuana was selected as a journalist-in-residence for the Institute of Tropical Medicine Antwerp (ITM) to provide media coverage on the 62nd Scientific Colloquium organized by ITM and the University of Pretoria. She focused on maternal health, telehealth, and COVID-19 disruptions on malaria progress in Kenya. One of the feature stories she covered during the colloquium - “How Telehealth Promoted Safe Maternal Care in Kenya” won an award in the AU-EU D4D African journalists’ competition in 2022.


She has worked with various local and international NGOs and associations in the capacity of content creation and advocacy including the Royal Commonwealth Society, National AIDs Control Council (NACC), Red Cross of Kenya, and Cerebral Palsy Society of Kenya (CPSK) to promote healthcare delivery and social justice.


Currently, Karuana is a One EA Champion with ONE Campaign, a global movement campaigning to end extreme poverty and preventable diseases by 2030 so that everyone everywhere can lead a dignified life. She supports ONE’s advocacy and campaign efforts in East Africa, particularly Kenya, and Ethiopia.


During her leisure time, Karuana loves walking on the beach, debating about contemporary societal issues, and swimming. If Karuana was not a rights activist, she would be a catholic nun – for both involve selfless service to humanity.


Karuana holds a Bachelor of Mass Communication and Journalism degree from the Technical University of Kenya.
