Prof. Sankar Ganesh is a Professor of Environmental Biotechnology and the Coordinator
of the Graduate School in Global Sanitation at BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus, India. He has
25 years of sandwich experience in academia and industry across SAARC, the Middle
East, and Europe.
Prof. Ganesh received his Ph.D. in Environmental Science
and Engineering from Pondicherry (Central) University, India. Before his current
academic tenure in India, he had post-doctoral training at the National Institute of Applied
Sciences, Toulouse, France. After joining BITS Pilani, Hyderabad Campus, in 2009, Prof.
Ganesh started teaching ecology, environmental science, environmental biotechnology,
waste management, sanitation technology, and gene toxicology. His research focuses on
waste and wastewater treatment, biomethanation, and biohydrogen production. He has
guided 15 undergraduate, 16 postgraduate, and 6 Ph.D. students for their thesis work at
BITS. Prof. Ganesh has been involved in several academic, translational, and societal
projects funded by the Swiss Red Cross, the Department of Biotechnology and the
Department of Science & Technology, the Government of India, Biotechnology Industry
Research Assistance Council (BIRAC), the Government of Andhra Pradesh and BITS Pilani.
He has published 2 books, 18 book chapters, and 122 research papers in reputed
international and national journals and conference proceedings. Prof. Ganesh is a
"Faculty-preneur" being the Co-Director of 'Almac ProTech' a startup company that has
spun off from his research on high-rate thermophilic anaerobic digestion of organic waste. Prof. Ganesh has delivered invited lectures in several countries, including the USA,
Australia, Rome, Singapore, Switzerland, France, and Dubai. Prof. Ganesh currently
serves as the Editor-in-chief of the GSTF Journal of Biosciences, Co-Editor of the GSTF
Journal of Ecology, and Reviewer Board Member of various journals, including Fuel,
Journal of Life Sciences; Toxicology Mechanisms and Methods, Journal of Water and
Climate Change, Scientific African, Environmental Science and Pollution Research,
Journal of Environmental Quality and Journal of The Institution of Engineers.
He is a member of various professional bodies, including the International Water
Association; Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, USA; Collaborative
Working Group on Solid Waste Management in Low- and Middle-Income Countries, St.
Gallen, Switzerland; SAVE FOOD, Global Initiative on Food Losses and Waste
Reduction, FAO, UN; Asian Council of Scientific Editors, Dubai; Biotech Research
Society, India; Association of Toxicology, India; Indian Society for Technical Education,
India; Society for Toxicology, India and National Solid Waste Association of India. Prof.
Ganesh has also served on various professional committees, including the State Level
Advisory Committee for Solid Waste Management, Landfill Leachate Management, and the Clean Hussain Sagar Initiative.
