He graduated in Civil Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico – University of Lisbon in 1990, when he also began his professional career. He later completed the General Management Programme at AESE Business School. He holds an MSc in Civil Engineering, specialising in Construction Sciences, from the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra, and a PhD in Civil Engineering from the same university, with research focused on Value Creation in Organisations. His doctoral work was unanimously approved with distinction and honours.

Over more than three decades, he has developed extensive multidisciplinary experience in the management and delivery of highly complex projects, combining engineering, project and contract management, organisational development, quality management and strategic advisory responsibilities. His career in Civil Engineering and Public Works has included senior management positions in Production, Quality and Human Resources, as well as responsibility for major building, road and railway infrastructure projects and the multidisciplinary coordination of engineering teams.

His professional portfolio encompasses projects with an aggregate construction value exceeding €435 million, at updated 2025 prices, including major transport infrastructure, institutional and scientific buildings, healthcare facilities and complex rehabilitation projects. Since 2022, he has served as Contract Manager for public works contracts at the University of Coimbra, including the Multidisciplinary Institute of Ageing - MIA Portugal UC BIOMED, a major scientific infrastructure project involving construction, specialist installations, laboratory equipment and furniture. This role forms part of a long-standing collaboration with the University’s Rectorate in technical, project management and advisory activities.

Since 2015, his professional activity has also expanded into healthcare management, consulting and executive education, focusing on operational efficiency, service organisation, competency management, process optimisation and value creation. His work combines management practice, applied research and simulation-based methodologies, particularly in complex organisational environments such as hospital emergency services.

His academic career spans more than two decades. He has taught at university, polytechnic and executive education level since 2001 in areas including Civil Engineering, Economics and Management, Project Management, Operations, Technology and Innovation. He has been associated with AESE Business School since 2008 and has served as Associate Professor since 2025. He is also currently a Visiting Professor at the University of Coimbra. His teaching includes Executive MBA and advanced management programmes in healthcare and other sectors.

Alongside his professional and teaching activities, he has developed a substantial track record in applied research at the interface between engineering and management, particularly in construction planning, process optimisation, organisational models, competency management and value creation. Between 2010 and 2016, he served as Scientific and Technical Supervisor at ITeCons – University of Coimbra, contributing to R&D&I activities, scientific review, postgraduate assessment and knowledge transfer.

Between 2019 and 2025, several of his research papers and presentations received Best Paper Awards and Best Presentation Awards at international conferences in Europe, North America and the Middle East. His research on Serious Games and experiential learning has also been published internationally, including by NOVA Science Publishers.

He is the creator and developer of BIGAMES® – Business Interactive Games, a registered trademark encompassing management simulations and Serious Games designed to reproduce complex organisational environments and support decision-making, leadership, competency development and value creation. BIGAMES® have been used in executive education and organisational development programmes involving hundreds of participants from public and private organisations, including leading healthcare institutions and major companies.

His work in management education and experiential learning has received significant international recognition. Research associated with BIGAMES® was distinguished at international management and engineering conferences, followed by the “Innovation in Managerial Educational Solutions” award in 2023/24 and 2024/25. More recently, BIGAMES® was named “Experiential Learning Provider of the Year 2025/26”, recognising the innovation and international relevance of its approach to management education and simulation. Since 2023, he has also served as a member of the jury of the QS Reimagine Education programme.

He is Co-founder and Executive Director of Bigadvantage Consultores, established in 2010, where he has led more than 30 multidisciplinary consulting projects for public- and private-sector organisations. Under his leadership, the company has received several national and international distinctions, including repeated recognition among the Top 5% of Portuguese SMEs and international awards for multidisciplinary and technical management consulting.
